Sturgeons, ancient species dating back to dinosaurs, are iconic to the Black Sea but critically endangered. Their alarming status and complex life cycles prompted the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) to launch a pilot recovery project.

Operating under BlackSea4Fish, this project aims to collect vital data on sturgeon biology, ecology, and the impact of fishing. It actively engages fishermen to assess bycatch and illegal fishing, laying the groundwork for informed management strategies.
