Continental fishing is vital for food security, livelihoods, and cultural identity across Latin America. However, fish productivity is declining in many aquatic systems. This issue is often analyzed solely from the perspective of fishing effort or compliance, neglecting crucial ecological, cultural, social, and governance factors.

Continental fisheries are complex socio-ecological systems where rivers, lakes, forests, communities, and institutions interact. A more integral management approach is essential for their sustainable use and responsible exploitation.
