The Promise of Ethical Consumption from Ideas Matter

Uploaded on Nov 14, 2011

November 3, 2011 - Cambridge, MA
"Buy local," "buy green," "buy organic" . . . we cannot buy anything without considering its moral implications. How has consumption become suffused with right and wrong? How effective has the ethical-consumption movement been in changing market behavior?

Ideas Matter, a joint project of Boston Review and MIT's Political Science Department, is a lecture series that brings our writers together with other experts and practitioners for substantive debate on the challenges of our times.

This is the testimony of Manari Shigua of the Sapara people of the Ecuadorian Amazon. His testimony addresses the designation of the Sapara peoples culture a masterpiece of the Oral heritage of humanity by UNESCO which acknowledges that all resources in t heir territory (trees, mountains, oil +) are the world's heritage. The Ecuadorian government wants to exploit these resources and must understand they are required to consult the world as no resources can be exploited in their territory especially those the people oppose.

Bring the community into the process by Alejandro Aravena

Published on Nov 6, 2014

When asked to build housing for 100 families in Chile ten years ago, Alejandro Aravena looked to an unusual inspiration: the wisdom of favelas and slums. Rather than building a large building with small units, he built flexible half-homes that each family could expand on. It was a complex problem, but with a simple solution — one that he arrived at by working with the families themselves. With a chalkboard and beautiful images of his designs, Aravena walks us through three projects where clever rethinking led to beautiful design with great benefit.

Our world knows four international crimes: war crimes, genocide, torture and crimes against humanity. Spanish examining magistrate Baltasar Garz and Scottish lawyer Polly Higgins believe that this list of serious violations of international law should be expanded with a fifth: ecocide. Will Higgins and Garz eventually succeed in gaining enough support to get recognition for ecocide, truly putting the large-scale destruction of our ecosystems high on the international political agenda once and for all?
