This interactive online Forum was hosted by the Pathways to Planetary Health initiative at the Garrison Institute.

On June 24, Garrison Institute Co-founder Jonathan F.P. Rose spoke with Jonathan F.P. Rose, Leonora Grcheva, and Erinch Sahan of Doughnut Economics Action Lab. In this thought-provoking discussion, they explored Doughnut Economics, which asks the question, "What is the goal of economics?" and answered it with a purpose: "Social and ecological wellbeing rather than growth or many other economic indicators that we pay too much attention to." They began with Kate describing the basic idea of Doughnut Economics, and then heard how Leonora, who leads the work with city and municipal governments at Doughnut Economic Action Lab (DEAL), is working with many cities to implement these ideas, and some of the exciting examples. Erinch then described how Doughnut Economics is being applied to businesses. This fascinating discussion was rich with ideas about how to improve the quality of life for all of life, and their application-- a wonderful example of the "Timeless Wisdom, Timely Action" that underlies all of the Garrison Institute’s work.

About Kate Raworth: Kate Raworth (sounds like ‘Ray-worth’) is a renegade economist focused on making economics fit for 21st century realities. She is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries, and co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab. Her internationally best-selling book Doughnut Economics: seven ways to think like a 21st century economist has been translated into over 20 languages and has been widely influential with diverse audiences, from the UN General Assembly to Pope Francis to Extinction Rebellion.
Kate is a Senior Associate at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, where she teaches on the Masters in Environmental Change and Management. She is also Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

About Leonora Grcheva: Leonora Grcheva has joined Doughnut Economics Action Lab to lead their engagement with cities, municipalities and other place-based administrations that are interested in putting Doughnut Economics into practice in their own context. Leonora is an urban planner, researcher and participation practitioner. She has over a decade of experience facilitating engagement with communities, cities and regions globally through her work as an urban planning consultant for UN-Habitat, a city leadership associate for University College London, and a community engagement consultant for built environment projects in the UK. She studied architecture in her home-country Macedonia, holds a Masters in Human Settlement from KU Leuven (Belgium), and a PhD in Urbanism from the IUAV University of Venice (Italy).

About Erinch Sahan: Erinch Sahan is the business and enterprise lead at the Doughnut Economics Action Lab. Recently, he was the chief executive of the World Fair Trade Organization and previously spent 7 years at Oxfam leading campaign initiatives and founded Oxfam’s Future of Business Initiative. Erinch has also worked at Procter & Gamble as a market strategy manager, established a furniture business and worked for Australia's aid programme. Erinch is a board member of the Social Enterprise World Forum and teaches sustainable value chains at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. He holds degrees in finance and law, and an honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes University.

Roger Ingersoll will discuss learnings related to over 20 presentations to parish communities, Catholic and secular colleges, a seminary, and other faiths (often to very conservative-leaning audiences). Our second presenter, Juan Rios, will cover effective outreach to Catholic Latinos, a recent focus area of the Catholic Action Team. Our final speaker Sr Ricca Dimalibot of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, will discuss climate advocacy within her religious community including initiation of the Pope Francis' 7 year journey to an integral ecology. She is a Family Medicine physician who runs the CHRISTUS Point of Light Clinic,located in a medically under-served community southeast of Houston. The congregation has taken a very public stand on climate and sustainability by holding climate symposia, as well as an Ecumenical Day of Prayer for faith leaders across Houston in 2019. Roger retired from ExxonMobil after 33 years where he worked on arctic, coastal, and offshore projects worldwide. During his career witnessed significant arctic changes since the 1980’s. Roger's been a member of Citizens Climate Lobby since 2016, is Co-group Leader and Grasstops Lead of TX-08 Woodlands-Huntsville Chapter, and is also active in CCL’s Conservative Caucus, and Catholic Action Teams. Roger has five beautiful grandchildren, so his hope is that Congress enacts meaningful climate legislation as soon as possible to preserve their future.

Jose Aguto will close out our conference with a call to action, addressing the important role of the laity to motivate and inform the church and the need and responsibility for advocacy. He'll also share his personal story of his passion to Care for Creation and how it is guided by his Catholic faith and strengthened by Laudato Si' to care for the poor and our earth. He received his BA in both philosophy and history at St. Louis University in 1990. Sequestering carbon in trees and soil is an effective tool in the global fight against climate change, yet farmers face obstacles to entering the carbon market. Based on nearly a decade of work in Haiti, Deborah McGrath discusses how colleges like Sewanee can participate in a win-win strategy for climate justice by investing in small farmers to reduce our carbon footprints. An ecologist and professor of biology, Deborah McGrath loves trees. Her research focuses on managing biogeochemical cycles in wetland and forested ecosystems to address environmental challenges in human-dominated landscapes. Dr. McGrath is the Carl Biehl Professor of International Studies and serves as Assistant Dean for the Environment at the University of the South. Since her days as a Peace Corps volunteer, McGrath has worked with farmers in the global South to integrate trees into farming strategies that maximize the triple bottom line: people, planet, and profit. She is grateful for longtime Sewanee Haiti Institute collaborators Pradip Malde, Photographer and Professor of Art, and Dixon Myers, Director of Outreach in the Office of Civic Engagement. In her first extended broadcast interview in the United States, we spend the hour with Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist who has inspired millions across the globe. Last year she launched a school strike for the climate, skipping school every Friday to stand in front of the Swedish parliament, demanding action to prevent catastrophic climate change. Her protest spread, quickly going global. Hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren around the globe have participated in their own local school strikes for the climate. Since her strike began in 2018, Greta has become a leading figure in the climate justice movement. She has joined protests across Europe. She has addressed world leaders at the U.N. climate talks in Poland and the European Union Parliament. She has even met the pope. And now she is in New York to join a global climate strike on September 20 and address the U.N. Climate Action Summit on September 23. Greta has refused to fly for years because of emissions, so she arrived here after a two-week transatlantic voyage aboard a zero-emissions racing yacht. She is also planning to attend the U.N. climate summit in Santiago, Chile, in December. Greta joined us Tuesday in our Democracy Now! studio.

Ridhima is the one who is challenging the most powerful people to take action. She won't stay quiet because her future as well as future of billions of young children is being spoiled. Watch this powerful talk by Ridhima who is not willing to 'tolerate' inaction. Ridhima is a daring 11-year-old girl who sued the Indian government for not taking serious steps to combat climate change. It was dismissed, but she escalated it to the Supreme Court. That’s a gutsy move by a young climate activist! The Uttarakhand floods of 2013 prompted her to take notice of the disastrous effects of climate change. The death toll in the floods affected Ridhima badly, and made her furious on the apathy of Indian government. She was invited to the United Nations General Assembly at the Climate Action Summit 2019. She joined Greta Thunberg on Sep 20 in her Global Climate Strike at New York. She also spoke at the international XYNETO exchange conference in Norway to spread awareness about climate change. Recently, Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia interacted with her in Rishikesh.
