To preserve the fabric of #Biodiversity, critical changes in how we manage and interact with complex land based systems are needed if we are to avoid triggering more climate tipping points. Better food systems are needed to take into account the wide range of complex interactions that affect the biosphere. We must work with nature, rather than against it. The Amazon region, a vital component of the living Earth system, is in danger of becoming savannah and has largely lost its ability to sequester carbon due to logging and agriculture, principally cattle raising, which damages the ecosystem. The preservation of peatlands requires a delicate hydrological balance. If too wet, methane is emitted, but if drained, peat emits carbon dioxide. #Permafrost melt is a threat to these fragile ecosystems. Engineering has always been about solving problems and adding value to society. However, the problems we are now facing are becoming more complex meaning that engineering needs to evolve. Global challenges such as climate change need a new generation of engineers who can learn to balance the competing needs of society and nature. These engineers will blend creativity, systems thinking and behavioural science to develop solutions which can be accepted by communities around the world, adding value not only to society but also our natural world. We call these people Zero Carbon Engineers and this talk will discuss why we need them and the some of the skills they will need. David Rooney is a Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on energy generation and materials and he is the Director of the Sustainable Energy Research Group at Queen’s and Director of the Bryden Centre, a cross-border renewable research centre. At present he works with oil and gas companies, regional industry and government to advise on Zero Carbon technologies. He is the Dean of Internationalisation and Reputation for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and has a long history of working with international partners including time in China developing the Queen’s College at the China Medical University in Shenyang. The chemical balance of our planet depends on highly diverse and adaptable microbiomes that live in soils, oceans, and the air. Microbial ecologist Steven Allison explains the potential for these fascinating microbial communities to help combat climate change while sustaining agriculture and building healthy soils. Dr. Allison holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from Stanford University and is a Professor of Ecology in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Earth System Science. In 2013, Dr. Allison was named an Early Career Fellow of the Ecological Society of America. As part of the University of California’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative, Dr. Allison was named the UC Irvine Climate Action Champion in 2016. With funding from this initiative, Dr. Allison established the Climate Action Training Program and later the Ridge to Reef Graduate Training Program. Dr. Allison teaches introductory ecology and ecosystem ecology at the undergraduate level, and his research focuses on ecosystem responses to climate change. Dr. Allison is also building new mathematical models that incorporate feedbacks among microbial communities, carbon cycling, and climate change. Oceans will play a central role in our 21st century economy, with the rapid growth of shipping, offshore energy, deep sea mining, biotech, and aquaculture. At the same time, ocean ecosystems are stressed and in danger of collapsing. This talk will describe exciting new innovations for making the ocean economy more restorative, resilient, renewable, and smart. Dan has spent the last three decades working on some of the world’s “grand challenges” – e.g. poverty, water, climate change, and oceans - through diverse roles in academia and business. Trained as an anthropologist, Dan spent his 20s living in the Himalayas, where his first-hand experience of seeing the impacts of the global economy on communities and ecosystems led him to work with companies to develop more sustainable business practices. Before coming to Duke, Dan led Coca-Cola’s water sustainability initiative, where he created dozens of public-private partnerships on water and sanitation, watershed protection, and sustainable agriculture in over 90 countries. Dan is now Associate Professor of the Practice at Duke University, where he directs the Center for Energy, Development, and the Global Environment (EDGE). Through teaching, research, and outreach, Dan seeks creative ways to make business a force for good in the world. Throughout the years, Dr. Damle has treated countless patients suffering from the health consequences of climate change. These illnesses, ranging from tick-borne illness and allergies to asthma and waterborne illness, are not uncommon or unique but have been occurring with increasing frequency over the past several years and disproportionately affect particular communities. Dr. Damle is the past president of the American College of Physicians (the largest specialty organization in the U.S.), Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and Founding Partner of South County Internal Medicine in Wakefield Rhode Island. He was a co-author on a seminal position paper of the American College of Physicians in 2015 and has for the past five years has been speaking to both professional and lay audiences around the world on the Human Health Effects of Climate Change. He is a founding member of the Medical Societies Consortium on Climate Change and sits on the Board of Advisors. He has advocated for mitigation of factors leading to climate change and their adverse effects on health to the House of Representatives and the Senate and locally with the Rhode Island Department of Health.
