She has carried out research in various institutions such as: -Center for Scientific Research for Laboratoire de Géophysique Interne et -Tectonophysique, Université de Savoie; Chambery, France. -Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University; Canberra, Australia. -Sensenada Higher Education, Earth Sciences, Baja California; Mexico. -Physikalisch Vulkanologisches Labor, University of Würzburg; Germany. -Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, US Geological Survey, Hawaii; U.S. -Instituto Nacionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Catania; Italy. She completed her Master's studies (Master's in Volcanology / Geophysics) at the University of Würzburg, Germany and her Doctorate studies (Doctorate in Sciences) at the Institute of Geophysics of UNAM. In the professional environment, she has experience in the industrial field in Munich, Cologne and Hanover, Germany, where she has held the position as a Consultant in the fields of environmental remediation, energy technology, geophysics and chemical analysis. She currently works as a Professor-Researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the Universidad Panamericana, Campus Aguascalientes, teaching classes in Engineering and languages. Her area of interest is the research and development of engineering projects, Circular Economy including the study of renewable energies and the analysis and treatment of water and soils. I think this has to be understood as in some regards an ethical issue, a moral issue and one has to see it as a wrong to contaminate the planet and to put at risk the future of humanity on the planet. And I think that change is coming and curiously but perhaps not really surprisingly it is coming from young people much more from the generation that’s currently in positions of leadership. Greta and other young people are out there saying to the leaders and political positions of power not only in the United States but across the world step up. You need to do more. And I think we have seen again and again that transformational change is often driven by generational change. And I think it’s almost certainly going to be true on climate change. Fifty years ago if we’d had this interview I’d probably be smoking or maybe smoking a pipe as a professor. That’s so unacceptable now you don’t even have to tell me that I can’t come in and light up a cigarette. Norms have changed. Values have changed. We know now that that’s completely unacceptable and a threat to public health. And I think we’re starting to get there on climate change. Things that might have in the past seemed normal, acceptable, even if they seemed a little bad, a little bit of harm are increasingly totally unacceptable and we therefore have I think the foundation for the kind of generational change and change in values that can really drive us more quickly towards climate change solutions. And in our Better Planet book there’s a really beautiful essay by one of the students at Yale, one of several student essays in this case by a guy named Paul Rink spelling out how young people in particular are starting to drive some of these court cases where they take on both the government and the big energy industry companies and say it’s up to you to make our future secure and you’re not doing the job you need to do. Having developed a methodology, fostered relationships with both business leaders and government officials and measured the impact over time, Arnis may be the first to tell you that the only thing that’s clear is just how complex this truly is. While we tend to consider the shadow economy as something negative, it turns out that there’s more nuance than we might believe. The results may be interpreted differently depending on who you ask, but at least we can know the truth of what’s lurking in the shadows (and how some of it may be even be a good thing). Arnis Sauka is a professor and director of the Centre for Sustainable Business at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga. Arnis has been extensively involved in applied research for organizations like the OECD and European Commission, among others, and his work has been published in leading international journals and several books. He is co- author of the annual Shadow Economy Index for the Baltic Countries and author of the annual FICIL (Foreign Investors Council in Latvia) Sentiment Index and study on the Shadow Economy in the Construction Industry in Latvia. Arnis has also been involved in management and consultancy activities, including serving as Vice Rector for Studies and Research at Ventspils University College and board member of FICIL and NGO BASE (Business Against the Shadow Economy). Technology is in large part about shaping our environment and surroundings to suit our needs. Securing such basic human requirements such as shelter, food and water, health and community, have driven the rise of civilization and technological progress – but in many cases we have learned that this progress has come at a cost to the environment. Anisotropy, the variation of material properties with direction, plays important role in choosing our technologies. Not only can nature surprise us when we take the basic analytical action of splitting materials and systems along directions of anisotropy, but we can also find ways to achieve our technological goals more easily and with less cost to the environment than when trying to do all the work ourselves. While it won’t help us solve all of our problems, asking if there is an easier and more natural direction to pull in can lead us to better and more sustainable solutions in the future. Tim Booth, associate professor at the Department of Physics at DTU. His current research interests revolve around 2D materials, its synthesis’ techniques and future application in new technologies. “Technology is in large part about shaping our environment and surroundings to suit our needs. Insect numbers are in decline across the planet. Should we worry? Entomologist Marcus Byrne believes we should. Insects perform countless ecosystem services. These are little jobs in the background that are massively important for our survival and that of the rest of the planet. So, what is the cause of this loss of insects? Marcus suggests that we don’t know for sure. The reasons could be anything from our widespread use of pesticides to habitat loss due to human-driven development. His research points strongly to the global increase of CO2 in the atmosphere as the most probable reason for this decline. In other words, rising CO2 levels could well be causing an insect apocalypse. We must see these findings as another strong motivation to reduce our CO2 output and safeguard the tiny creatures that run our planet. Marcus Byrne is a professor of entomology at Wits University, South Africa, where he teaches zoology and entomology. He grew up in the UK and despite being terrified of its limited fauna he avidly watched Jacques Cousteau and David Attenborough on the TV. Moving to South Africa, he got a job as a technician at the Dung Beetle Research Unit in Pretoria. At the time the unit was exporting African dung beetles to control dung-breeding flies in Australia. This experience opened his eyes to two wonderful aspects of insects; firstly biological control where one organism is used to control the population of another, and secondly dung beetles, which are enigmatic little insects that continue to entertain him to this day, 30 years after first encountering them.
