Climate emergency: underneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge

This is Laura. Earlier today, Laura was suspended below the Sydney Harbour Bridge to call attention to our climate emergency.

Laura grew up just down the road from an open cut coal mine, and she’s seen first-hand the effects of coal on her community’s health. That’s why she’s calling on Scott Morrison to declare a climate emergency and make the shift away from dirty coal.

I'm not your inspiration, thank you very much by Stella Young

Stella Young is a comedian and journalist who happens to go about her day in a wheelchair — a fact that doesn't, she'd like to make clear, automatically turn her into a noble inspiration to all humanity. In this very funny talk, Young breaks down society's habit of turning disabled people into "inspiration porn."

In this spirited conversation with Mia Birdsong, the movement's three founders share what they've learned about leadership and what provides them with hope and inspiration in the face of painful realities. Their advice on how to participate in ensuring freedom for everybody: join something, start something and "sharpen each other, so that we all can rise."

Sarah van Gelder & YES! Magazine

November 2015

When Sarah van Gelder got together with a few friends in 1996 to start a magazine about hopeful news and positive actions, it was, to say the least, a total leap of faith. It was one of these beautiful endeavors that begin in one’s garage when no one really knows how it’s all going to pan out into the big world. Sarah simply didn’t see anything better to do with her creative skills. Twenty years later and with a run of 50,000 copies per issue, YES! Magazine has established itself as an indispensable and hope-infusing read for a growing segment of the progressive-minded population of this country, people who simply refuse to cave under the barrage of depressive and disempowering negativity propagated by most of the commercial media.

Prayer Vigil, Juneteenth, Portland, Oregon

Portland Interfaith Clergy Resistance sponsored a prayer vigil at Terry Schrunk Plaza, across from City Hall, on Juneteenth, a day to commemorate emancipation from slavery in Texas on that day, June 19th in 1865. This film observes the 8 minutes, 46 seconds of silence and we suggest our viewers take the opportunity to reflect on the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, when Minneapolis police officers took a series of actions that violated the policies of the Department.  The situation turned fatal, leaving Mr. Floyd unable to breathe, even as he and onlookers called out for help. Participating clergy included: Rabbi Ariel Stone, Shir Tikvah and PDX Interfaith Clergy Resistance; Rev. Jon Aney, United Church of Christ; Rabbi Debra Kolodny, Portland United Against Hate; Rev. Aric Clark (he/his); and Davina Bookbinder, Rabbinical Student
