Nature always chooses the form of matter that is the most stable, but sometimes less stable forms have more exciting properties. Carbon is one such material. Graphite which is dark and soft is the most stable form of carbon but diamond, which is also made of carbon, is bright, hard, and metastable. On a nanometer length scale, carbon has even more exciting properties. This talk presents the discovery of magnetic carbon. Dr. Puru Jena received his Ph. D. in Physics from the University of California at Riverside in 1970. After postdoctoral appointments at State University of New York at Albany, Dalhousie University, Halifax, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Northwestern University, Evanston, and Argonne National Laboratory, he joined Michigan Technological University, Houghton in 1978 as Associate Professor of Physics. He moved to Virginia Commonwealth University in 1980 and was promoted to Professor of Physics in 1982 and named Distinguished Professor in 2005. He served as Program Director at the Materials Science Division of the National Science Foundation during 1986-87 and as Jefferson Science Fellow and Senior Science Advisor at the US Department of State during 2007-08. Dr. Jena’s research covers a wide range of topics in nano-structured materials, condensed matter Physics, and materials Science. He is the author of more than 630 papers including 14 edited books. His Google citations and H index are 31,300 and 88, respectively. He has given over 500 invited talks in 32 countries, including over 250 invited talks at international conferences and has organized over 60 international conferences. Some of Dr. Jena’s many honors include Fellow of the American Physical Society; Outstanding Scientist of Virginia; Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia; Presidential Medallion, University Award of Excellence, and Outstanding Scholar from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has served as a member of numerous scientific panels at the National Academy of Sciences, National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Army Research Office, Virginia Governor’s task force on green energy technologies, co-chair of the Presidential Commission on bilateral scientific collaboration between USA and Russia, and the Department of Energy Executive Committee on the “Basic Research Needs for the Hydrogen Economy.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Edward Miguel is the Oxfam Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics and Faculty Director of the Center for Effective Global Action at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 2000. He earned S.B. degrees in both Economics and Mathematics from MIT, received a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow, and has been a visiting professor at Princeton University and Stanford University. Ted’s main research focus is African economic development, including work on the economic causes and consequences of violence; the impact of ethnic divisions on local collective action; interactions between health, education, environment, and productivity for the poor; and methods for transparency in social science research. He has conducted field work in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and India. He has published over 110 articles and chapters in leading academic journals and collected volumes, and his work has been cited over 45,000 times according to Google Scholar. He is a recipient of the 2015 U.C. Berkeley Carol D. Soc Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Award, the 2012 Berkeley campus-wide Distinguished Teaching Award, the Best Graduate Adviser Award in the Berkeley Economics Department, and has served on over 140 completed doctoral dissertation committees.
