The talk focuses on the importance of supporting regenerative agriculture as an effective strategy to mitigate climate change and be better prepared for the next pandemic. It is now accepted that our failure to slow the spread of the current pandemic is reminiscent of our failure to slow greenhouse gas emissions that have led to climate change. The systemic weaknesses exposed by the pandemic will be further compounded by climate change in the years to come. However, the crisis has offered a glimpse of new and more resilient food systems, as communities have come together to plug gaps in their food systems. We must learn from our past lessons while ensuring that the measures taken to curb the crisis are the starting point for a food system transformation that builds resilience at all levels. Climate change is a tremendous opportunity to change course and move into a future that embraces the holistic definition of life. In so many ways, a fundamental restructuring of how we cultivate our food is at the heart of this shift. As today's current events have taught us, we must act now. Chandra Slaven is a land-use advisor, who recently recovered from COVID-19. In light of this experience, she has found herself questioning the value of healthier food as a form of preventive medicine and what important role land-use policy-making can play in this era of growing pandemics.
