Climate change is one of the biggest challenges that humankind is facing in this century. Have you considered compost as a sustainable solution that can successfully tackle this problem in a collaborative and innovative manner? As a founder and CEO of a waste technology startup, Ashley has always been passionate about sustainability and action on climate change. She has graduated from the University of Queensland in 2018, with dual degrees in Business Management and IT, alongside international experience, accumulated while working with high-tech startups and volunteering with environmental groups and movements. It was then that Ashley saw the massive global issues surrounding waste, the impact potential of recycling, and the role that innovative technologies could play in creating solutions. She went on to found Monty Compost Co, a startup company that develops hardware and digital technologies to enable efficient and accessible composting for everyone, everywhere, to tackle the significant challenge of managing organic and food waste. In her talk, Ashley will share with us powerful, yet, unexpected revelations that could help achieve efficient sustainability and solve climate change. In order to address the current state of the industry, and the need for robust labor and environmental standards, ECA Executive Director Ashley Preece was joined by two outstanding guest presenters. Hear from Laura Day Rivero, who has extensive experience implementing sustainable practices in the cannabis industry, most recently as Operations Director at Yerba Buena, one of the first OLCC licensed cannabis cultivators in Oregon;  Dr. Elizabeth Bennett, Assistant Professor of International Affairs and Director of the Political Economy Program at Lewis & Clark College, as well as a Research Associate at the Center for Fair and Alternative Trade (CFAT) at Colorado State University. Recently, Dr. Bennett has been studying the demand for ethically sourced cannabis products in Oregon at the dispensary/retail level. This study is also tracking the how informed the dispensary employee, or “budtender” providing them are on the topic of ethically produced cannabis.

Ashley Preece reviews the process she and colleagues are pursuing to address certification program for cannabis to include labor standards, third party inspections, and uniformity across States. Since the event in March, 2017, The #Cannabis Certification Council has been established representing a merger of Ethical Cannabis Alliance & Organic Cannabis Association. Ashley Preece was named the Exec. Director.
