Biodiversity

About This Collection

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. It is necessary for life to thrive on Earth.

Aldo Leopold, one of the great thinkers of conservation, observed more than half a century ago the importance of protecting species. "To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering," he wrote. Losing species is like throwing away one by one the engine parts of an airplane while flying.

Biodiversity is a major initiative of Conservation International.

Biodiversity conservation provides substantial benefits to meet immediate human needs, such as those for clean, consistent water flows; protection from floods and storms; and a stable climate.

Saving Life on Earth: Success Stories and Strategies
September 18, 2020
Amid the extinction crisis, climate emergency and a pandemic, we can all use some good news. It’s true. Despite all the bad news, we’re still scoring significant gains for wild plants and animals this year. We’ve defeated pipelines, won protections for endangered wildlife and even marked the end of a decades-long battle over a disastrous water-stealing project in the West. It doesn’t happen without energy, creativity, tenacity and, of course, you. So join us in celebrating these victories in the fight for a livable planet. This discussion features our Nevada director Patrick Donnelly and North Carolina attorney Perrin de Jong who will share some of their strategies for success.
