Tajikistan faces significant health and environmental risks from obsolete Soviet-era pesticides. A pilot project, supported by FAO, the Global Environment Facility, and Tajikistan's Committee for Environmental Protection, successfully cleaned a contaminated mini-landfill in Jayhun District.

This operation safely removed 33 tons of pesticides and 5,000 tons of polluted soil, transferring them to a specialized hazardous waste facility. The initiative provides a replicable model for remediating approximately 200 similar sites nationwide, allowing local communities to reclaim land for sustainable agriculture, including future lemon greenhouses.

In Kyrgyzstan, a FAO project addresses thousands of tonnes of hazardous Soviet-era pesticides lacking proper management. The initiative mapped 62 problem sites, repacked 90 tonnes of highest-risk chemicals near Osh, and established a national pesticide handling team. Successful bio-remediation trials and a pilot container collection system, which gathered over 1,200 kg, are now blueprints for national implementation.

Further efforts include the launch of Kyrgyzstan's first electronic pesticide registration system in September 2025. Medical staff received training on pesticide exposure, while over 960 agronomists now advise farmers on integrated pest management (IPM). University students are also learning IPM practices, shifting away from past chemical dependence.

In Türkiye's Isparta region, a major apple producer, FAO's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) project has achieved remarkable success. The initiative safely disposed of 14 tonnes of illegal or expired pesticides. Field trials demonstrated IPM reduced codling moth pesticide use by 70% while ensuring 0% fruit damage.

Farmers now effectively use pheromone dispensers, reporting no pesticide application, yield loss, or pest damage. This success led to a 70% overall reduction in pesticide use, gaining regional trust and prompting neighbouring areas to adopt similar incentives.

FAO's Global Environment Facility-funded Lifecycle Management of Pesticides project is tackling Central Asia's toxic legacy. In Tajikistan, farmer Tuychi Shoev requested help removing obsolete pesticides from a local mini-landfill. FAO partnered with the Committee for Environmental Protection, remediating the site by removing over 5,000 tonnes of polluted soil and 33 tons of obsolete pesticides to the Vakhsh landfill.

The restored land, once hazardous, is now clean. Tuychi plans to build a lemon greenhouse and cold storage facility, creating up to 25 jobs. This transformation from danger to development highlights FAO's commitment to a healthier Central Asia and new livelihoods.
