Olive seeds reach the Svalbard Global Seed Vault for the first time

For the first time, olive seeds have been deposited in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, marking a significant international safety backup effort. This initiative was made possible through collaboration involving the FAO’s International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, the International Olive Council, and the Universities of Córdoba and Granada, with support from the Spanish Plant Genetic Resources Centre and NordGen.

The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture is vital for enabling countries to conserve, share, and utilize crop diversity globally. For more information, visit the FAO Plant Treaty website.

Connecting surveillance and laboratory systems for faster animal health responses in Ghana

Effective disease surveillance relies on timely, accurate, and accessible laboratory information. As health threats grow, laboratories are crucial for detecting risks, supporting diagnoses, and informing response efforts.

This video introduces SILAB, a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that digitizes the complete lab workflow, from sample reception to reporting. SILAB enhances sample traceability, enables real-time reporting, and strengthens interoperability between laboratories and other health information systems.

These capabilities improve decision-making, support disease surveillance, and facilitate faster, more coordinated responses to health events. By strengthening data management and connectivity, SILAB enhances information exchange and supports animal and public health surveillance.

Strengthening early warning and biosecurity in Ghana

Animal health threats are increasingly frequent, complex, and interconnected, directly impacting livelihoods, food security, and global health. From 2022 to 2025, a project by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), supported by the U.S. Government, strengthened early warning systems, biosecurity, and workforce capacity. This initiative helps countries detect risks earlier and prevent disease outbreaks.

Demonstrated in Ghana, the project enables risks to be identified in the field, reported digitally, analyzed in laboratories, and translated into swift, coordinated action. Integrated systems like FAO's Event Mobile Application (EMA-i+) and Emergency Prevention System (EMPRES-i+) connect surveillance, diagnostics, and national decision-making, strengthening One Health systems and community resilience. While implemented in Ghana, Guinea, and Tanzania, its tools are designed for global application.
