Biodiversity sustains resilient agrifood systems in Lao People's Democratic Republic

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic, located at the crossroads of Southeast Asia, is facing ecological challenges due to unsustainable practices and climate change. In collaboration with the government, FAO is implementing a transformative program to integrate biodiversity into agricultural sectors and support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Through a national roadmap for 2024–2030, the initiative focuses on climate-resilient cropping systems and sustainable land management. Farmers in provinces like Champasak are already benefiting from practices such as integrated pest management and crop diversification, which enhance food security and soil health. With training and policy alignment, Lao PDR is fostering resilient agrifood systems that prioritize biodiversity and secure livelihoods for future generations.

More shade for more cocoa in Côte d'Ivoire

Cocoa farmers in Côte d'Ivoire are enhancing their resilience to climate change by restoring degraded land through agroforestry. Sylvie Sopie N'Gbesso has doubled her cocoa production in two years, while Nicole Kambou is promoting sustainable farming via a cooperative that provides essential equipment and labor.

This initiative is supported by two FAO programs: PROMIRE, funded by the Green Climate Fund, which encourages zero-deforestation cocoa agroforestry, and SCOLUR-CI, backed by the Global Environment Facility, which focuses on cooperative models for sustainable cocoa production and ecosystem restoration. Together, these efforts help farmers protect forests and secure their livelihoods.

Inside a Fishing Vessel Inspection in Senegal | Port Inspectors Tackling IUU Fishing

In Dakar, Senegal, fisheries inspectors participate in vessel inspection training, reviewing documentation, inspecting gear, and verifying catches. Supported by FAO, ICCAT, and the GEF-funded Common Oceans Tuna Project, this training enhances national capacity to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Effective port inspections are crucial for promoting sustainable fisheries management. Through FAO's Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA), countries are improving monitoring and cooperation among authorities to protect marine biodiversity and ensure sustainable tuna fisheries. Learn more about how training and international collaboration are closing ports to illicit fishing worldwide.

International Women's Day 2026: Celebrating the Contributions of Women Farmers in Italy and Beyond

On International Women's Day, 8 March 2026, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations invited women farmers from Italy and beyond to share their experiences at FAO Headquarters. The International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF 2026) emphasizes the need for collective action and investment to close gender gaps and enhance women's leadership in agrifood value chains.

Empowered women farmers are crucial for transforming agrifood systems. Addressing gender disparities in land, finance, technology, education, and decision-making improves the well-being of women and their families, increases productivity, and fosters resilience to climate change, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Webinar on Preventing Child Labour and Forced Labour in the Banana Sector through HRDD

Bananas are the most exported and consumed fresh fruit globally, playing a vital role in trade and food security. The implementation of Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) is becoming essential for creating a fair and resilient supply chain. HRDD helps businesses identify and mitigate adverse human rights impacts in their operations.

The FAO's World Banana Forum webinar discussed integrating child and forced labour prevention into HRDD to enhance decent work in the banana industry. It provided stakeholders with practical tools and strategies to address the root causes of these issues, improve monitoring systems, and foster safer workplaces. For more information, visit the FAO World Banana Forum.

The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO) 2026 - Trade, Resilience and Food Security

Food and agricultural trade increased fivefold between 2000 and 2024, with low- and middle-income countries becoming more integrated into global markets. Yet these markets face growing exposure to shocks, including extreme weather, conflicts, pandemics, macroeconomic pressures and financial crises. The 2026 edition of The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets examines how such shocks affect trade, how disruptions are transmitted through trade linkages, and what this means for global food security. It highlights the need for trade policies that reflect the interdependence of agrifood systems, strengthen resilience and help mitigate the effects of shocks on food markets and food security. Building Climate Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security of Smallholder Farmers in Uganda

Subscribe! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=FAOoftheUN In Teso, smallholder farming households in the districts of Katakwi and Kaberamaido are building resilience to climate change while improving food and nutrition security. Through enhanced agricultural practices, improved post-harvest management, and better access to markets, agropastoral communities are strengthening their livelihoods and creating more sustainable futures. Implemented by FAO in partnership with WFP and funded by the Government of Norway, this three-year initiative strengthened local institutions and supported vulnerable groups, including pregnant and lactating women, contributing to healthier, more resilient, and economically empowered households.
