The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) leverages advanced technology for scientific research, supporting informed decisions in fisheries and aquaculture. Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and underwater drones provide real-time data and imagery, enhancing our understanding and management of the marine environment.
These tools enable safe navigation in challenging areas, preventing habitat damage. Drones also streamline aquaculture operations, conducting regular inspections of fish health, nets, and mooring systems. Explore more at fao.org/gfcm/en or follow GFCM on social media: LinkedIn and X.
This video highlights the significant impact of the Africa Phytosanitary Programme (APP). Expanding to 38 countries, the APP empowers nations to generate high-quality data, crucial for supporting international trade and enhancing food security across the continent.
The program also strengthens Africa's plant health systems by modernizing pest monitoring through harmonized protocols, advanced geospatial technology, and comprehensive training initiatives. India's camel population faces a sharp decline due to reduced breeding, habitat loss, and socio-economic shifts. However, Sarhad Dairy in Gujarat's Kutch region is spearheading a revival. By establishing a market for camel milk and a cooperative for aggregation, they are creating a sustainable solution.
The Government of India supports this initiative, promoting camel milk to help revive the declining camel population. The FAO assists by replicating this successful model in other parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan.

This event will explore innovative strategies for scaling smart farming systems, specifically focusing on empowering women and youth within the agricultural sector.
Smart farming systems are revolutionizing agrifood by integrating sustainable practices with data, AI, IoT, and precision agriculture. This enhances farm management, productivity, and resource optimization (water, fertilizers, pesticides, energy), while strengthening soil and ecosystem health. It fosters efficient, resilient, and resource-smart agriculture, boosting productivity and reducing environmental impact.
Beyond environmental benefits, smart farming creates new opportunities for youth and women's entrepreneurship, strengthens digital skills, and accelerates scalable solutions, significantly improving livelihoods for small-scale farmers. Learn more: Global Conference on Smart Farming.

On International Parliamentarism Day, FAO's Rene Orellana Halkyer reaffirmed the organization's commitment to strengthening parliamentary efforts for a world without hunger. FAO believes parliaments are vital for building efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. When the right to food becomes law, it establishes state policies benefiting current and future generations.
For over fifteen years, FAO has supported the Parliamentary Front Against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean, a network of 25 parliaments that has driven over a hundred food security laws. This initiative expanded in 2024 with the Ibero-American and Caribbean Parliamentary Alliance for Food Security, uniting parliamentary networks from Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, and Portugal, with FAO as its Technical Secretariat. The "Food First Pact" further consolidates this legislative agenda, aiming for the III World Parliamentary Summit Against Hunger.
