What is Sustainability?

About This Collection

This is one of the most popular search questions about sustainability on the Web.

There is no one definition although a popular one cited is the Brundtland Commission of the United Nations of March 20, 1987: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”  The soul of sustainability is our interconnectedness of Mother Earth and her children through to the next seven generations.

Live from Sustainable Brands—The State of Sustainability. LBW 6.10

"Living Between Worlds" broadcast this month "live from Sustainable Brands" —featuring Raphael Bemporad, Dr Sally Uren, Daniel Aronson, Heather Tischbein, Ron Nahser, Nitin Garg, Shel Horowitz, Randy Rolfe, Bea Boccalandro, Ken Homer, and others.

We explored the state of sustainability ("Is it dead," Andrew Winston asked in the opening plenary. "No, it's under attack. And they only attack you if they're afraid of you."), the challenges and rewards we practitioners face on the front lines, and Raphael's ”enrichment vs extraction” framing that participants tell us has already had a big impact on their thinking and actions.

Check it out! And let us know in the comments what this conversation provoked for you—and let us know what you'll do about it!
