About This Collection

As a result of a United Nations General Assembly resolution passed in December 2008, World Oceans Day is celebrated on June 8th each year. This annual event spurred the creation of a special collections around our oceans and the efforts being made in conservation ranging from pollution to habitat restoration to fishing and fisheries.

The special collection continues to grow along with Plastic in Our Oceans and 1Water, with a focus on the challenge of providing clean drinking water to the world population.

The deep sea is a dark, freezing environment under immense pressure, home to unique creatures like ghost sharks, goblin sharks, vampire squid, and the faceless cusk eel. These animals have developed remarkable adaptations to thrive in such extreme conditions.

However, the deep sea is an unexplored ecosystem facing threats from deep-sea mining, which can cause irreversible damage by killing wildlife and releasing pollution. This jeopardizes the ocean's ability to combat climate change. We must protect these mysterious creatures before they are lost forever. Learn more about the impact of deep-sea mining and how you can help at Oceana.
