The Chumash have been a maritime culture for thousands of years, their territory stretching from Malibu to Point Conception and westward to the sandstone cliffs of the Channel Islands, twenty miles off the coast of California. To navigate the treacherous currents of the channel for fishing and trading, they built the strong plank canoe tomols for which they are famous. But over centuries of European colonization, which included forced assimilation and enslavement of Chumash people, the craft of tomol building was nearly lost. Today, Alan Salazar works alongside his Chumash and Fernandeño Tataviam communities to pass their knowledge to the next generation of tomol builders and paddlers. However, for the technology to become climate-relevant a far-reaching carbon revolution is needed. Christoph Beuttler is Carbon Dioxide Removal Manager at Climeworks and an international expert on Negative Emissions as well as CO2 utilization development and policy with several years of experience in the field. Christoph also works at Risk Dialogue Foundation a Swiss NGO which originated at the University of St. Gallen. He is a founding Board Member of Negative Emissions Platform in Brussels and visiting lecturer in Risk Perception and Communication in Science and Policy at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zürich. Stephen is a 22 year old from Pennsylvania who is co-founder and National Field Director of Sunrise Movement; an organization that is mobilizing a grassroots army of young people across the country to combat the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives and lobbyists. Stephen is one of the organizers of the ‘Sunrise Semester’ a full-time fellowship program with 70 young people ready to go all-in to make climate change matter in the 2018 elections in five key states. The program combines campaigning for progressive champions with direct action in order to expose the influence of fossil fuel money. His work with Sunrise Movement is focused on encouraging youth to elect real leaders who can stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. Stephen began organizing at Swarthmore College where he led a fossil fuel divestment campaign that received widespread media attention.

Speaker bio: Tracey Osborne is an Associate Professor, Vice Chair and Presidential Chair in the Management of Complex Systems Department at the University of California, Merced. Tracey's research focuses on the social & political economic dimensions of climate change mitigation in tropical forests & the role of Indigenous Peoples, the politics of climate finance and governance, and climate equity and justice. She's worked on these issues globally with extensive field experience in Mexico & the Amazon, is the founding Director of the new UC Center for Climate Justice & leads the Climate Alliance Mapping Project, a collaborative effort between academics, environmental non-governmental organizations, and Indigenous organizations working for a socially-just response to climate change through research, maps & digital stories. Her work has been published in high-impact geography, social science & interdisciplinary journals. She has been invited to share her research internationally in venues academic & non, such as Conference of the Parties climate change meetings. She received her PhD from the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley. In her Talk, Ruth will explain the functions of the EU emission trading system and how your single action can indeed have an impact. Ruth, a graduate physicist, worked in the field of renewable energies and emissions trading at Statkraft and gained experience in the voluntary carbon market at atmosfair. However, she wanted to make it possible to offset carbon emissions with a direct effect in Europe. That’s why she founded the non-profit organisation ForTomorrow in December 2019.
