The 1997 Dutch documentary, "The Call of the Mountain: Arne Næss and the Deep Ecology Movement," directed by Jan van Boeckel, explores the philosophy of Norwegian thinker Arne Næss. This production delves into themes of ecology, environment, global awareness, and spirituality.

Næss, a pivotal figure in the late 20th-century environmental movement, coined the term "deep ecology." His vision was significantly influenced by Rachel Carson's 1962 book, *Silent Spring*. For further details, refer to the Foundation for Deep Ecology.

U.S. wetlands are in crisis, with half of these vital ecosystems in the lower 48 states vanishing since the 1780s. A 2023 Supreme Court decision removed federal protections, leaving remaining wetlands vulnerable to draining and filling.

Wetlands are crucial for biodiversity; nearly 50% of threatened and endangered species rely on them, with over 33% living exclusively there. Their loss degrades water quality, increases flood risks, and accelerates extinction; many endangered wetland species lack critical habitat protection.

Urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect more critical habitat for wetland-dependent species. Learn more and act at www.saveourfreshwater.org.

While Western legal systems often view nature as property, indigenous communities have long seen themselves as part of it. As environmental degradation mounts, a new legal strategy, "The Rights of Nature," is gaining traction globally.

This film explores the origins and implementation of this concept in Ecuador, New Zealand, and the United States. It highlights Ecuador's constitutional reforms recognizing nature as a legal entity, Māori partnerships granting personhood to natural features, and its application in urban settings like Santa Monica. The film examines the successes and challenges of these new legal structures in restoring ecosystems and achieving balance between humans and nature.
