The Garrison Institute's first 2022 Pathways to Planetary Health (PPH) Forum, recorded on January 25, featured Dr. Haley Mellin (Art-to-Acres, Conserve.org) and Dr. Steven Brumby (Impact Observatory). Joined by co-founder Jonathan F.P. Rose, they discussed innovative large-scale conservation, biodiversity's role in planetary health, and visualization to support these goals.

The event focused on the "Half-Earth" pathway, which emphasizes conserving 50% of terrestrial and ocean areas by 2050 in biodiversity-rich zones and connecting corridors. At 16, Alexandra Collins discovered Sterigenics had emitted levels of ethylene oxide (EtO), a known carcinogen, near her Hinsdale, Illinois, community for decades. Her neighborhood's high cancer rate (nine times the national average) spurred Alexandra to cofound Students Against Ethylene Oxide (SAEtO) to ban EtO emissions near schools and homes.

SAEtO educates the public, advocates for safer sterilization, and organizes campaigns. Alexandra's advocacy, with allied groups, led to the 2019 closure of the Sterigenics facility near her home. She also launched EtO-Free, a project whose all-girl team created a website reviewing EtO-free beauty products, empowering women to demand manufacturing transparency.

Despite increased female political involvement, a gender gap in ambition persists. Achieving safe social and political environments requires women's equal voice in government. Muriel Collins, a University of Mississippi law student, is dedicated to this cause.

A summa cum laude Political Science graduate from Mississippi College, Muriel earned numerous honors, including the Outstanding Student in Pre-Law Award. She interned for Congressman Steven Palazzo and worked on a state Attorney General campaign. After law school, Muriel plans to lobby in Washington, D.C., aiming to encourage and propel more women into American politics.
