Albert-László Barabási, a network scientist, believes that understanding the underlying structure and relationships of complex systems is crucial. Barabási’s research has challenged the notion of random connections and led to the discovery of a more accurate representation of how these systems are organized. Barabási’s exploration began with the vast internet. Surprisingly, he found that the intricate web of connections did not follow random patterns but instead followed a power load distribution. He named these networks “scale-free networks.” Barabási’s groundbreaking work reveals that new connections in our networks tend to form with already well-connected elements. Scale-free networks exist in various complex systems, such as cellular interactions and social networks. “It is, what it is?” Donald Trump’s infamous words about the rising COVID-19 death toll in the USA, may accidentally and unintentionally contain keen insights. “It is” a system involving the Coronavirus (SARS COV 2) and humans and the “what it is” refers to how the virus invades us and replicates itself, a system guided and limited by only the laws of physics and chemistry that drive the natural world. Sadly and predictably, mankind was poorly prepared to deal with this pandemic, especially when it became apparent that the virus did not care about borders, politics, economies, education, or even sports. Science to the rescue! ​ Unfortunately, “it is what it is” applies equally well the series of events that will necessarily follow from our relentless modification of the global carbon cycle. The wake-up call that we have received from our poor-handling of the current pandemic may provide a limited window in which to encourage climate action or it might result in a period of “crisis fatigue”. In either case, scientists, educators, leaders, and general citizens will need to understand why we responded so poorly in this crisis so we will take the dramatic action required to address climate change. ​ 「算了，就這樣了」(It is, what it is)----現任美國總統對美國國内節節上升的死亡個案如此言論，也許實有洞見。如果「It is」指新冠病毒與人類並存在的系統，「what it is」應爲物理、化學定律限制的自然下，病毒入侵人體自我複製的系統。病毒不顧邊疆、政治、經濟、教育(甚至體育)，大肆進犯疫情面前毫無招架之力的人類。我們應該慶幸，科學在拯救我們! 不幸的是，「it is what it is」對應在一連串不可避免的事件，同樣見於人類擅自嬗變碳循環的情況。現時疫情處理差劣是一個警號，警醒我們從有限情況下應對氣候危機，否則將會陷入「危機疲勞」時期。不論如何，科學家、教育人士、不同界別領袖與民衆，都必須明白我們處理疫情差劣的緣由，我們同樣要採取果斷行動應對氣候變化危機。 The seed that grew into Mark McGinley’s concern about the current state of the world was planted during a childhood spent exploring nature in Texas, Australia, California, and elsewhere. As a student (B.S. Zoology, University of California, Santa Barbara; M.S. Ecology; Kansas State University, and PhD Ecology, University of Utah) he conducted research on the behavioral and evolutionary ecology of animals and plants. During his 24 years as a professor at Texas Tech University (Department of Biological Sciences and Honors College) he introduced students to nature by teaching field courses in Jamaica and Belize, along the Rio Grande, and 6 summers teaching marine biology and scuba on sailboat in Caribbean. He also endeavored to improve the scientific and environmental literacy of students and general public by helping to develop undergraduate programs in Integrated Science and Natural History; Humanities, graduate programs in STEM for middle school and secondary school teachers, and serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia of Earth. Thaalavattam is not a band, it’s a project, and an experience. Montry might be at the centre of it, but it’s mainly about collaborative work, not just with musicians, but also with visual artists and designers from all fields who have the passion to experiment and create. He creates all his instruments with reused material like industrial discarded materials, shock absorbers, paint cans, soda bottle crowns, pet bottles, bicycle parts and discarded PVC pipes etc. We have a lot of inspirations and influences from nature, colours, people, what I see in every day life, conversations, found objects like floating jugs, plastic bags and bottles, graphic design, experiences of my travels around the world, street music and so on. Inspiration is all around. Our motto is Reduce Reuse Retune and the vision is to CLEAN THE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH MUSIC. Montry Thaalavattam was 'the first live act from India’, having performed at the O.Z.O.R.A. Music Festival (DRAGON-NEST) in Hungary in 2014, and were honoured to be part of the opening and closing acts. We have played in 2015, and invited to headline again in 2016, making it three years in a row. Also we have been part of TEDx Vienna and various festivals in Europe like Tree of Life Gathering (Austria), Tanz durch den Tag Aufwind Festival (Austria), Griasdi Handpan Festival (Austria), Ancient Festival (Germany), Sisyphos (Berlin), Burning Mountain (Switzerland), Samsara Festival (Hungary), Sun Festival (Hungary), Rostfest (Austria), Garbicz Festival (Poland) Amsterdam dance event 2019 Montry Manuel, an environmentalist and musician born and brought up at Cochin. Currently he is based in Austria. Montry had the love for music since his childhood. He was influenced by his father for all his creative ways of living and the love for music. He was trained by his guru Jerry Peter (Cochin) who instilled in him the love of drums. Also he worked in the field of advertising as a art director for about 10 years while pursuing music as a hobby till he decided to be a musician full-time. He was a founding member of the renowned Indian band “Swarathma” and was with them for seven years. They created 3 albums, many collaborative works and toured the country and the world extensively. Montry always been interested in experimenting and creating new sounds, so he started to ideate in creating music from FOUND OBJECTS in 2010. He separated from Swarathma and created the “idea” of Thaalavattam (local language of Kerala, India, it translates to “A Circle of Rhythm”) in 2011 in Bangalore (India). In our politically polarized times, we may not always want to interact with those who have different viewpoints from ours. As lobbyists for a bipartisan climate solution, leaving our echo chambers is critical to achieving our mission. In this Braver Angels Town Hall progressives/liberals will hear from a diverse panel of conservatives and learn to appreciate common ground. You will leave with an understanding that bipartisanship is not just a given - it requires conscious effort from all. Dr. Bill Doherty is a Professor in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota where he directs two centers relevant to today’s presentation: The Minnesota Couples on the Prink Project and The Citizen Professional Center. Following the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, he co-founded Better Angels, a citizen initiative to counteract political polarization and restore the fraying social fabric in American society. Jacob Abel is a spokesperson for RepublicEn.org and a former conservative outreach fellow with Citizens Climate Lobby. In these roles he has lobbied several congressional offices, published multiple op-eds, and appeared on new outlets such BBC, Vice-News, and NowThis. During his time in CCL he worked with chapters to help increase their conservative membership and hosted workshops on how to speak with Republicans about climate change. Steve Saltwick partners with Lynn Heady to catalyze the growth and the impact of the field organization (local Alliances and the 50 States) of Braver Angels. He co-founded the Braver Angel Alliance in Central Texas in 2018. He is a bio-psychologist whose career took a path through high-tech on six continents. He researches the guiding principles of the mammalian brain. He has published in SCIENCE but prefers to dote on his first grandchild and two border collies. Ron is a retired teacher from Denver Public Schools, is an Instructional Technologist and holds a Business BA from Iowa State in Industrial Administration. Ron credits being a Republican to his hero, Frederick Douglass, and he enjoys community service through volunteering, including that with Braver Angels. He also coached football, wrestling, and track for 30 years, and enjoys reading and writing. CCL State Coordinator for California, Elizabeth Fenner joined CCL in 2015 to help further what still seems like breathtakingly effective and fair policy. A teacher and researcher who is passionate about respecting all voices, Elizabeth has worked in and volunteered with schools, libraries, nonprofit organizations and community groups. Bruce Morlan is a co-leader of the CCL Braver Angels Action Team and has been a CCL volunteer since 2015.

Since more than 15 years, Celine has been working on the reality of war crimes around the world. Through her work in the field, she has met many victims of war crimes, in particular victims of sexual violence and rape and has come to understand the limitations that exist in the ground to help these victims and properly prosecute their assaulters. In this talk, Celine Barden, Founder of WWoW explains how we can use technology to accelerate justice and more effectively fight sexual violence as a strategic tool of oppression in time of conflicts. The world and the international scene is pushing us to think differently on how to respond to rape and sexual violence as a war crime and the Back Up app of the WWoW allows for that: a tool that enables the international aid community to create a better impact and engage fit solutions that actually respond to the real needs of survivors, victims and the people on the ground. Céline Bardet is an international lawyer and criminal investigator specialized in war crimes, international crimes, justice and security issues. Currently, Céline works as an independant expert consultant for the United Nations, the European Union and other international institutions such as Interpol. She has a post graduate degree in International Public Law and International Criminal Law and also holds a diploma of International Criminal Investigation. She is a published author. In 2014, stroke by the massive use of sexual violence in war and fragile environment and the silence around it, she decided to found an NGO called “We are NOT Weapons of War” (WWoW) which aims to make rape as a weapon of war a global public issue by leading awareness campaigns and educating people about this organized process, and its consequences. WWoW also developed a tech tool The Back Up, an encrypted system of alert for survivors and support for investigator and activists enabling them to transfer in a secured manner, elements of information and pieces of evidence. The Back Up enable also survivors to get access to medical psycho social and legal services, where they are. The tool is using IA and the blockchain to ensure authentification of documents and legal cases. Celine Bardet is now creating a think and Do Tank agency called #DisruptJustice focused on international justice and security issues, and how innovation and technology may become the path to make justice and security sector more effective and fair to people it supposed to serve.
