She earned a B.A. from Berea College and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. Her teaching and research interests include human rights, fair trade, and politics of developing countries. Payne is the Director of the Interdisciplinary Dominican Republic Program and associated Warrior Coffee Project, which provide opportunities for Lycoming students to gain valuable field experience in the Dominican Republic through participation in meaningful, long-term service-learning projects that help solve real-world community problems. ---------------------------- Lycoming College purchases coffee beans from the El Naranjito Association at a fair price. In the last few decades many solutions have emerged to manage our waste particularly the biodegradable waste. Decentralized solutions are noteworthy in terms of lowering carbon footprint given that waste does not be transported long distances. However, decentralized solutions are not able to take advantage of the economies of scale . In many countries where the idea of 'service fee' for waste management is still evolving, there is an urgent need for alternate financing models. Carbon financing is emerging as a good fit as decentralised solutions bring in significant carbon savings. Sandeep R Choudhury, Co-Founder VNV Advisory talks about Carbon Financing. A sustainability professional with a keen desire to leave the world a better place. He is exploring and mobilizing financing options to make climate action financially viable. Sustainability: Toronto. July 2, 2010. Yes it's possible says Dr. Peter  Victor, Professor and past-Dean of Environmental Studies at York University. Economic growth is the over-arching policy objective of governments worldwide. Yet its long-term viability is increasingly questioned because of environmental impacts and impending and actual shortages of energy and material resources. Furthermore, rising incomes in rich countries bear little relation to gains in happiness and well-being . Growth has not eliminated poverty, brought full employment or protected the environment. Results from a simulation model of the Canadian economy suggest that it is possible to have full employment, eradicate poverty, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and maintain fiscal balance without economic growth. It's time to turn our attention away from pursuing growth and towards specific objectives more directly relating to our well-being and that of the planet.
