Free data allows anyone to tackle air pollution and climate change. Petabytes of free data exist on the internet, such as satellite data, ground sensor data and climate model data. These are resources which have incredible value in better understanding issues like air pollution and climate change and in helping ordinary citizens devise solutions to these large-scale issues. Find out how you as an individual can make a difference. James Poetzscher is a 17-year-old high school student interested in air pollution and climate change. He has authored four research papers in these areas, two of which are currently in peer-review for prestigious journals. He has mapped the global decline in air pollution on behalf of the European Environmental Bureau James Poetzscher is a 17-year-old high school student interested in air pollution and climate change. He has mapped the global decline in air pollution on behalf of the European Environmental Bureau and his maps were published in media outlets including the BBC, Reuters and more. He’s built a global inventory of maps which he displayed on his website greeenhousemaps.com. He’s also built an air quality data portal, published by notable environmental organizations, and written articles for major media outlets. James hopes to inspire others, especially young people, to take collective action in tackling air pollution and climate change, two century-defining issues. The San Diego Zoo Safari Park has a unique biotech facility called the "frozen zoo" that could reverse the extinction. Using in vitro fertilization, scientists hope to implant a Northern White Rhino embryo inside a Southern White Rhino, a closely related species. Cheryl Suchors began writing at age six, when she wrote a play starring her sister and herself. She continued to write poetry until she took a detour through the business world for twenty years. She holds degrees from Harvard Business School and Smith College. Her memoir, 48 PEAKS, Hiking and Healing in the White Mountains, was published by She Writes Press in September, 2018. As the government affairs coordinator at the National Audubon Society in Washington, D.C., Tykee James has a special role—organizing bird walks with members of Congress and congressional staff. Birding has been important to Tykee ever since he started as a teen in Philadelphia. Last year, after a racist incident against a Black birder in New York’s Central Park, he and fellow birders decided to create Black Birders Week. They had only hours to organize the event, which included using social media to reveal a whole world of birding by people of color. During that week, the #BlackBirdersWeek campaign had more than 600 million impressions on social media sites. It also generated national press coverage. Tykee joins us to talk about the incredibly successful campaign and the need to tell stories about Black experiences that go beyond narratives of trauma. He also shares his plans for this year’s Black Birders Week.
