While on a trip to the Maldives in 2009, he came up with a solution to the problem of an abundance of sun, but not so much available land. If you have maxed out the available space for photovoltaics on land, why not put photovoltaics on the sea? By developing a marine floating solar system which can provide any required solar capacity to almost any island, an island could switch off their diesel gensets completely during daytime. Martin founded Swimsol in 2012 and worked in cooperation with the Technical University of Vienna to develop SolarSeaTM - the world's first commercial modular marine-grade floating solar system. Today Swimsol has 55 employees and has successfully completed projects in the Maldives, Indonesia, and Malaysia, and are currently expanding into new markets. Don Alejandro Cirilo Pérez, Wakatel Utiw (Wandering Wolf), is Quiche Maya from the highlands of Guatemala. Wandering Wolf serves as: leader of the National Mayan Council of Elders of Guatemala; Day Keeper of the Mayan Calendar; 13th generation Quiche Mayan Spiritual Leader; a founder and Grand Elder of the Continental Council of Elders & Spiritual Guides of the Americas; Extraordinary Ambassador in the Guatemalan government representing the indigenous pueblos; and an international lecturer on Mayan culture.His mathematical provenance extends to the traditional and elegant mathematics of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, which culminates in the Mayan year “Zero,” or approximately 2012 in the Gregorian calendar. Grandfather Cirilo holds the great honor of keeping sacred the teachings, visions, ceremonies and prophecies of the Maya people.

We are losing biodiversity at an unprecedented scale and rate, faster than we are able to measure the loss, let alone combat it. These are daunting challenges, which require every tool available to humans. Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf discusses how Artificial Intelligence (AI), the ultimate bio-hack, can help us slow the destruction and even reverse the damage. AI not only makes it possible to quickly scale conservation solutions, but in ways that can be remarkably personal, enabling each and every one of us to make a difference. Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology at the Ohio State University, where she is also the Director of the Translational Data Analytics Institute. As a computational ecologist, her research is at the unique intersection of computer science, wildlife biology, and social sciences. She creates computational solutions to address questions such as how environmental factors affect the behavior of social animals (humans included). Tanya is also a director and co-founder of the AI for conservation software non-profit Wild Me, home of the Wildbook project, which brings together computer vision, crowdsourcing, and conservation. Wildbook has been featured in media, including The New York Times, CNN, and National Geographic. Tanya thanks the co-founders of Wildbook whose StripeSpotter class project started this wild journey. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's misleadingly named Wildlife Services program kills more than a million wild animals every year, typically at the request of Big Ag. Scattering public lands with cruel traps and indiscriminate poisons, the program targets carnivores like coyotes, bears, beavers, otters and foxes. Even rare species like grizzlies and wolves are caught in the crosshairs. We've been working for years to shine a light on the feds' wildlife-killing and have succeeded in gaining protections for wildlife in several states. This presentation features our Carnivore Conservation Director Collette Adkins and Andrea Zaccardi, a senior attorney in our Northern Rockies office. In addition to talking about Wildlife Services, we discuss the latest news on grizzly bears and wolves, including the expected loss of wolf protections nationally and the importance of state-level wolf work if that does occur.
