In the face of large global institutional (economic, political, educational, etc.) obstacles to advancing the Rights of Mother Earth, it is time to explicitly state what we can and must do. This brief presentation is essentially a report-out on what Indigenous Peoples from around the World are saying about activities and actions that must be encouraged and enhanced in the struggle to defend Mother Earth from human abuse and misuse. Dr. Dan Wildcat is the Director of Haskell Environmental Research Studies (HERS) Center and Dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas, where he has taught for 25 years. 

This speech took place of the 2012 Indigenous Forum, co-produced with the Cultural Conservatory, at the Bioneers National Conference.

On November 14, WECAN organized a COP29 press conference with esteemed speakers from Brazil to share calls to action and advocacy efforts to protect Indigenous rights, forests, water, communities, and the global climate on the path to COP30.

With COP30 slated to be held in Belém, Brazil it is vital to hear from the Indigenous women who are mobilizing to protect Indigenous rights and biodiversity in the Amazon and connected biomes.

Speakers included: Puyr Tembé, First Secretary of State for Indigenous Peoples of Pará in the Brazilian Amazon, and co-founder of Ancestral Indigenous Women Warriors (ANMIGA), Brazil; Concita Sõpré, Co-founder, National Association of Indigenous Women's Warriors of Ancestry (ANMIGA), and President of the Federation of Indigenous Peoples of the State of Pará (FEPIPA), Brazilian Amazon; Lucimara Patté, Co-founder of the National Association of Indigenous Women's Warriors of Ancestry (ANMIGA), from the Atlantic Forest biome in Brazil; with moderation by Osprey Orielle Lake, Founder and Executive Director of Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), United States.

Indigenous organizations and communities, led by women, are mobilizing locally and globally to protect and defend their communities and territories from governments and corporations that continue to violate Indigenous and human rights, and push forward extractive projects that harm local ecosystems and put communities at risk.

During this press conference, Indigenous women from the Amazon Basin and Brazil brought forth calls to action for Indigenous rights and protection of forests, water, communities, and the global climate.

To truly address the root causes, as well as the scope and scale of the climate crisis, the Green New Deal must be cross-cutting in its approach, steadfast in feminist principles, and strive to combat historical oppressions.

Sammy Gensaw III, a dynamic young Yurok leader, shares some of his experiences working for ecological and cultural revival along the Klamath River, central to his people’s identity and livelihood. He discusses how the epic struggle to remove destructive dams required drawing deeply from ancestral wisdom, modern science, and cutting-edge activism, and how Indigenous leadership can play a central role in rekindling our connections to land and water and ushering in a restorative, resilient future for all of us.

Sammy Gensaw III is a leader in environmental and cultural preservation in his Yurok community. Director of the Ancestral Guard, a nonprofit focused on teaching traditional fishing and farming methods to Indigenous youth, his approach is deeply rooted in food sovereignty, cultural preservation, community resilience, and self-sufficiency. Gensaw's activist journey began in his early teens with the Klamath Justice Coalition, the largest dam removal and river restoration project in history, and his contributions to restoring Native American foodways are featured in the documentary film, Gather.
