Jason Box, an American living in Copenhagen, is a Professor in Glaciology and Climate at the Geologic Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS). Jason is a contributing author to the most recent three Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scientific assessment reports and is the lead author on recent Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP) reports. Jason joined two sessions hosted by C2G on October 10th at the 2019 Arctic Circle Assembly, where scientists, policy experts, indigenous activists, youth representatives, and other civil society representatives explored some of the toughest questions facing decision-makers today as they contemplate the future of the Arctic.

The Bullard Center, in collaboration with MH Reach (Maternal and Infant Environmental Health Riskcape Research Center) and the Sunnyside Redevelopment Community Organization, hosted a powerful Environmental Toxic and Maternal Health Mini Tour in Houston’s historic Sunnyside neighborhood.
Tour Goals:
Examine the environmental and maternal health challenges impacting Sunnyside
Connect with experts on the link between pollution, climate justice, and maternal health
Empower participants to take action through advocacy and policy engagement
Participants visited critical sites affected by:
Air pollution
Concrete batch plants
Metal recycling facilities
Rock quarries
They witnessed firsthand how environmental hazards disproportionately affect marginalized communities and maternal health outcomes. The experience concluded with a call to action—encouraging attendees to write petitions aimed at influencing policy and advancing ongoing research.
This tour was more than just educational—it was a catalyst for environmental justice and community-driven change.

On November 16, WECAN hosted a COP29 Press Conference articulating a new legal framework and economy based on living in balance with Earth’s natural systems. Presenters discussed the Rights of Nature movement, its successes, and how it can offer a systemic framework for defending and protecting biodiversity, communities, and the climate.

Speakers included: Casey Camp-Horinek (Ponca Nation), Ponca Nation Environmental Ambassador and WECAN Board Member and Project Coordinator, Turtle Island/USA; Nnimmo Bassey, Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation, Nigeria; Tom Goldtooth, Executive Director of Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN); and Osprey Orielle Lake, Executive Director of the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), USA.

WECAN presented “A Global Initiative for a Universal Declaration on the Rights of Nature,” which outlines a strategy for national and subnational governments to have a mechanism for countries to adopt a Universal Declaration on the Rights of Nature.
