Wildlife trafficking, the illegal trade in animals and their products, is the fourth largest illicit trade globally. Driven by consumer demand, it targets vulnerable species, pushing them towards extinction and fueling the biodiversity crisis. This highly profitable trade also causes immense animal suffering through inhumane shipping and threatens human health by spreading zoonotic diseases.
To combat this worsening problem, Defenders of Wildlife engages in public education campaigns in trafficking hotspots and partners with countries to strengthen wildlife laws. They also advocate for imperiled species and human health at international forums like CITES, working to reduce both the supply of and demand for wildlife.
