Electronic vouchers and market-based solutions to commercialize Afghanistan’s seed sector

The FAO, funded by the World Bank's Emergency Food Security Project (EFSP), has launched a large-scale seed commercialization initiative in Afghanistan. This program addresses challenges like farmer liquidity, seed affordability, and weak market linkages, with flexible delivery arrangements to support women farmers facing additional barriers.

Through a co-payment electronic voucher system, farmers access certified wheat seed directly from Private Seed Enterprises. The project covers 50% of the seed cost, with farmers contributing the rest. This approach strengthens farmer ownership, stimulates demand, and aims to commercialize the seed sector, reinforcing domestic markets and increasing wheat production.

Integrated Fire Management: local solutions, global action

Wildfires are a continuous global threat, devastating lives and ecosystems. To combat this, Integrated Fire Management (IFM) is transforming our approach from crisis response to prevention and resilience.

Through the Global Fire Management Hub, FAO and partners unite countries, scientists, Indigenous leaders, and communities. This collaboration shares data, strengthens policy, and translates local wisdom into global action, as seen with Brazil’s Prevfogo brigades and Indigenous firefighters. Protecting our forests through unity ensures a safer future.

FAO Elevate Program - Advanced Active Cooling Photovoltaic Panel Solar System

Marco Colangeli and Enrico Mandola have developed an innovative solar energy system. Their active-cooled photovoltaic panels float on water surfaces, simultaneously reducing evaporation, increasing energy efficiency by 20%, and creating affordable energy production space for local farmers.

Tested and scientifically approved between August and December 2025, this system is ready for implementation. It offers a significant solution, potentially reducing Jordan's annual water loss from dams by approximately 25 million cubic meters.

Resource Mobilization for National Coordinators

The 2024 Synthesis Progress Report and an FAO survey revealed significant challenges in funding Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) activities, citing limited institutional funding, technical capacity gaps, and stringent donor requirements. These findings inform new Guidelines on Resource Mobilization (RM) for National Coordinators. A webinar will present these guidelines, facilitating cross-regional exchange on challenges and opportunities in managing AnGR programs.

How spray races are protecting cattle, livelihoods and wildlife in Zambia #swmprogramme

In Zambia’s Kazungula District, where livestock and wildlife coexist, tick-borne diseases devastate cattle and farmer incomes. To combat this, the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme has commissioned three new spray races in the Mize-Lukuni Community Conservancy.

These facilities ensure even medicine application, protecting herds and improving animal health, milk production, and market value. Managed by local cooperatives, they also generate income and reduce reliance on poaching. This initiative fosters healthier cattle, stronger communities, and safer wildlife, building a brighter future for both people and nature.

Delivering sustainable water solutions to promote climate-smart agriculture

In southern Angola’s Banda Chibia, drought once forced residents like Rita to walk for water. This struggle has ended. Through a partnership between the Government of Angola, the European Union, and FAO, the Banda Chibia Dam now secures water for agriculture and livelihoods. With over 21 million cubic meters capacity, it irrigates 750 hectares, supporting thousands and enabling climate-smart agriculture and resilience.

Farmer Field Schools taught communities efficient water management and sustainable farming, resulting in green fields, year-round harvests, and improved incomes. Rita now harvests food, not searching for water. This project demonstrates how partnership and innovation transform vulnerability into hope.
