Sturgeon, ancient and iconic Black Sea species, face severe threats. Recognizing their alarming status and complex life cycles, the GFCM initiated a pilot project to support their recovery. This BlackSea4Fish project gathers data on sturgeon biology, ecology, and fishing interactions, assessing bycatch and illegal fishing to establish science-based management measures.

In 2026, we are scaling up river operations by launching our 30 Cities Program. This initiative aims to prevent up to one-third of river plastic from reaching the ocean.

The Hand-in-Hand initiative facilitates socially inclusive agricultural investments in 8 of Bhutan's 20 districts. It aims to unlock untapped potential, boost farm incomes, and reduce poverty by prioritizing transparent, innovative, and impactful investments in Special Agricultural Products (SAP) for production and market advantages.

The government supports these efforts by providing access to state land, developing key infrastructure (roads, irrigation, energy), and fostering an enabling policy environment. Recent incentives include investment allowances for priority sectors like agriculture.

Tunisian farmers face significant annual losses from increasing climate hazards. To address this, the FAO, under the National Adaptation Plan (PNA), is bolstering Tunisia's FIDAC fund. This vital national mechanism compensates farmers for natural disaster damages and builds resilience.

To ensure transparency and efficiency, regional committees received comprehensive training. This enhanced their skills in damage assessment and farmer support, enabling fair and reliable compensation. The strengthened FIDAC now better protects Tunisian farmers from the growing impacts of climate change.

This year, we are expanding our river operations. Concurrently, we are developing drone and AI technologies to identify plastic hotspots in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Our research continues into discarded fishing gear to find effective solutions. Once our Interceptors are operational, we will clean up legacy pollution from coastlines, restoring these environments and preventing plastic from re-entering the ocean.
