Bivalve molluscs are vital due to their economic, nutritional, and social significance. However, as filter-feeding organisms, they can accumulate pathogenic microorganisms, chemical contaminants, and marine biotoxins. This necessitates robust surveillance, monitoring, and sanitary control systems to manage risks associated with their production and consumption.

To address these challenges, the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean hosted the webinar “Food Safety in Bivalve Molluscs.” This technical forum strengthened regional capacities and facilitated experience exchange on critical food safety issues, covering marine biotoxin monitoring, mollusc health programs, technical tools, and risk management approaches.

Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) is a fundamental right for Indigenous Peoples, recognized by the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Since 2015, FPIC has been mandatory for all FAO projects and activities involving Indigenous Peoples.
