How AI is revolutionizing the world of education: From classrooms to education policies

Premiered November 1, 2022, this discussion explores Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. AI, defined as computer systems performing human-like tasks such as visual perception and speech recognition, is transforming education. It improves quality and access to knowledge, optimizing learning patterns and automating tasks for students and teachers.

In this AI for Good Perspectives event, Professor Mérouane Debbah, Chief Researcher at TII's AI and Digital Science Research Center, details how data and AI revolutionize education. He also addresses shaping national policies to advance equal learning, a core UN Sustainable Development Goal. Debbah is also a professor at CentraleSupélec and Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence.

Digital transformation for people-oriented cities and communities | AI for Good Webinar

The ITU and 12 partners developed the "Toolkit on Digital Transformation for People-Oriented Cities and Communities" to strengthen technical and institutional capacities for urban digital transformation. This toolkit connects technological solutions for urban operations, empowering authorities to adopt cutting-edge technologies for more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable societies.

It offers insights on international standards, guidance, and use-cases for emerging technologies like AI, alongside reports on digital transformation. Universally beneficial, the Toolkit supports cities, communities, regions, and countries regardless of their development level or status. An AI for Good Webinar will explore its benefits for driving digital transformation within the smart city ecosystem.

Fighting wildfires with intelligent robots | AI for Good Webinar

Global wildfires are intensifying due to climate and land-use changes, with a projected 30% increase by 2050. Mitigating this growing risk is crucial for protecting human health and ecosystems.

Robots are increasingly vital for first responders, detecting, monitoring, and extinguishing blazes in hazardous environments too dangerous for human entry. An AI for Good webinar, streamed on January 18, 2023, showcased the next generation of autonomous firefighting robots, designed to work alongside emergency workers, enhancing safety and effectiveness on the front line.

Good Riddance to Ducey's Junk Wall

After weeks of protests, legal action, and public comments, the last shipping container from former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey's rogue border wall was removed. This anti-immigrant symbol sliced through a vital wildlife corridor, impacting endangered jaguars and ocelots. The Center's Russ McSpadden called it "perhaps the only major border wall removed globally since the Berlin Wall." Taxpayers, however, still pay millions for Ducey's destructive stunt.

Male mason wasps have evolved a unique defense: using spiked genitals to mimic a female's venomous sting. Lacking true stingers, males deter predators like tree frogs by faking one with spines on their reproductive organs. A 2022 study found this strategy 35% effective, compared to females' 87% escape rate with real stingers.
