Sunset Crater and the Bonito Flow: Geological Processes and Human Interactions

This talk explores Sunset Crater, Arizona's youngest volcano, erupted 940 years ago, impacting the Sinagua people. Geologist Dr. Jeffrey Meyer will share its story and his work mapping the unique Bonito lava flow, notable for traveling uphill.

Understanding this flow aids hazard prediction and interpreting past flows on Earth, the Moon, and other planets. Dr. Meyer, a retired geology instructor, became curious about the Bonito flow, leading to detailed mapping via Lidar.
