An important context missing from most discussions of sustainability, especially within academia

Individual sustainability is a crucial, yet often overlooked, aspect of broader sustainability discussions. It involves cultivating harmony, interconnection, and high self-awareness across one's values, thoughts, and behaviors.

This includes maintaining increasing control over one's physical, emotional, social, philosophical, environmental, and intellectual well-being. Key skills for individual sustainability are awareness, motivation, and intentional self-development, coupled with a value system that recognizes the interconnectedness of all global biological systems and humanity's appropriate place in the natural world.

This presentation was first published in 2013 by Kat McDearis and Eric Pappas.

Eco Eye Series 12 - Episode 3 - "What's up with the weather" -Climate Change

Eco Eye Series 12, Episode 3, hosted by Duncan Stewart, investigates climate change.

Published on January 21, 2014, this episode examines Ireland's recent extreme weather, including record freezing temperatures, heatwaves, and the worst flooding in 800 years, which left 50,000 homes uninsured. It questions if our climate is changing and discusses the potential impacts both domestically and internationally.

Eco Eye Series 12, Episode 7 - "The Green Fireman"

Ireland's public sector spends €9 billion annually on goods and services, totaling €100 billion over the next decade. This significant public expenditure presents a crucial opportunity to reduce carbon footprint, conserve energy, and boost environmental awareness among citizens.

Dublin fireman Neil McCabe demonstrates how this investment could foster environmentally friendly buildings and generate substantial cost savings. Transitioning to a green, low-carbon economy would not only save money but also create jobs.

The question remains whether local authorities and the government will embrace this vision. This discussion, hosted by Duncan Stewart, was published on Feb 18, 2014.

"Circular Economy" by Eco-Eye in Ireland

Hosted by Duncan Stewart, the 'Take, make, dispose' model describes our current linear economy: extracting raw materials, making products, then discarding them. This 20th-century consumerism has led to dwindling resources, overflowing waste, and significant environmental damage.

In contrast, the Circular Economy offers a progressive, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative, mimicking nature by eliminating waste. The final Eco Eye series 12 program explores this model, showcasing Irish companies adopting it and featuring experts discussing its challenges and opportunities.

Eco Eye series 12, Episode 9 "The state of water"

This "Eco Eye" episode, hosted by Duncan Steward, examines Ireland's water supply challenges. Parts of Roscommon endure continuous 'boil' notices due to contamination, and Dublin faced water shortages last October during a major web summit.

However, students at Kilmeena National School in Mayo, led by Principal Mickey Carney, are demonstrating exceptional understanding of water conservation. These children are now leading the way in protecting Ireland's most vital natural resource, providing important lessons for the community.
