A new five-part podcast series explores how a circular economy for food can address these issues, creating a future system that benefits people, farmers, nature, and businesses.

Lichens, a complex symbiosis of fungi and algae, are now recognized as intricate micro-ecosystems. Despite their ecological importance, these diverse organisms are often overlooked. They thrive in varied habitats, from lush forests to the Sonoran Desert, which alone supports over a third of North America's lichen species.
Join lichen expert Dr. Frank Bungartz for a Speaker Series talk exploring what lichens are, where they are found, and their fundamental role in ecosystems. Dr. Bungartz, Collections Manager at ASU's Lichen Herbarium, will share insights from his extensive research on lichen diversity and function in regions like the Sonoran Desert, Galapagos, and Ecuador.
Dr. Morgan Levine, author of "True Age," outlines three dietary factors for longevity: quantity, quality, and timing. Caloric restriction (a 20% reduction) has shown lifespan benefits in animals, possibly by preventing overeating. A plant-based diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole foods while limiting animal products and refined sugars, is also beneficial. Fasting, or time-restricted eating, may mimic caloric restriction benefits via 'hormesis,' boosting resilience to aging.
Optimal diet is individual, influenced by genetics and age, and should be monitored via biological age and well-being. Dr. Levine, a former Yale professor now at Altos Labs, researches aging systems. For more, watch "The science of super longevity" or read the transcript on Big Think.
This episode from @The-Well, created with the @JohnTempletonFoundation, features network scientist Albert-László Barabási. He challenges the idea of random connections in complex systems, revealing a more accurate organization. His research, starting with the internet, uncovered "scale-free networks" where connections follow a power-load distribution, not random patterns.
Barabási's groundbreaking work shows that new connections form with already well-connected elements. These scale-free networks are found in diverse systems, from cellular interactions to social networks, offering crucial insights into the world's inherent complexity. Watch his interview, subscribe to The Well on YouTube, or read the transcript.

A recent expedition in Mexico's Gulf of California tallied just 10 to 13 vaquitas, confirming these small porpoises are critically endangered but not yet extinct. Their population has plummeted from 600 in 1997, primarily due to entanglement in gillnets set for the endangered totoaba fish.
Despite the dire situation, Mexico has largely failed to enforce its totoaba fishing ban. The Center, advocating for over 20 years, now urgently calls on the government to enforce this ban immediately to prevent the vaquita's permanent loss. Learn more: https://biodiv.us/43PxPIE
