On April 24, 2011 a PR firm working for Dow Chemical contacted author Anna Lappé to submit a 60-second video for The Future We Create: The Future of Water, a web project about water sustainability (sponsored by Dow Chemical). This was the video that was rejected.

Nearly 40 years ago, before daughter Anna was a twinkle in her eye, Frances Moore Lappé published Diet for a Small Planet. Today, the pair still stand firmly behind this book which started as a one-page handout and would become the foundation of Annas own life's work stressing that to understand world politics, we need first to understand food. Anna Lappé, one of Time's "Eco- Who's Who," argues that there's an unsettling connection between food production and global warming in her latest, Diet for a Hot Planet. The mother and daughter have traveled far and wide and conclude that "hunger is not caused by a scarcity of food but by a scarcity of democracy." They encourage us to recognize food as a powerful starting point for solving one of our planet's biggest problems.

A Conversation with Anna Lappe (Part I)

Anna Lappé is a widely respected author and educator, renowned for her work as a sustainable food advocate.  Named one of Time’s “eco” Who’s-Who, Anna is a founding principal of the Small Planet Institute and the Small Planet Fund and has for more than a decade been a key force in the growing international movement for sustainability and justice in the food chain.

Her latest book, Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It (Bloomsbury), was named by Booklist and Kirkus as one of the best environmental book’s of the year.

Two Young Farmers by Brandon Mazur
Farmers Brandon Mazur and Stephanie Moore met while attending Pacific University at the school garden and have been farming side by side ever since. They formed Good Natured Gardens, a small scale organic farm located on Sauvie Island about 15 minutes from Portland OR. In this video Brandon talks about the importance of small farms and what the next generation of farmers of farmers need in terms of community support.

Both Brandon and Stephanie are dedicated to the production of clean, fair and fresh vegetables and herbs. By cultivating the land in a positive way and helping others throughout the community to grow their own gardens, they hope to inspire creative, just and tasty ideas for the present and the future.

GasLand by Josh Fox

Trailer for GASLAND - (2010) Directed by Josh Fox. Winner of Special Jury Prize - Best US Documentary Feature - Sundance 2010. Screening at Cannes 2010. This addresses hydraulic fracturing a.k.a. fracking, a highly contentious, high risk energy alternative. 

A criticism of  Gasland is a video by the folks at ANGA - American Natural Gas Alliance - who argue that Gasland is "flawed." 

You are going to have to form your own opinion after listening to a wide range of voices of sustainability, but especially the citizens who are experience fracking first hand in their fields and communities.

UN Messenger of Peace Wangari Maathai
Kenyan tree-planting activist Wangari Maathai became a UN Messenger of Peace during the Copenhagen Climate Talks. A delegate to her Green Belt Movement, RRI's Elizabeth Baker was in the second row as UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon pinned a dove on Professor Maathai to symbolize the honor shared by only a handful of others. Professor Maathai spoke vividly of the role of activism in protecting civil society's interests worldwide and called for climate action in a Copenhagen deal.
