Hundreds of farmworkers and their supporters are in New York City for Wendy's shareholder meeting, demanding improved working conditions for tomato pickers. Organized by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), the Fair Food campaign, featuring organizer Gerardo Reyes-Chavez, advocates for better wages and workers' rights.

This initiative follows a White House-recognized Social Responsibility Program, which McDonald's, Subway, Burger King, and Taco Bell have already joined. These companies pay an extra penny per pound of tomatoes to raise wages and commit to sourcing from farms that respect workers' rights.

Indigenous women are leading global efforts to uphold Indigenous rights, sovereignty, and Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in interactions with financial institutions and corporations. These institutions often perpetuate human and Indigenous rights violations, particularly in extractive industries. A recent event highlighted the need for these entities to implement FPIC, Indigenous rights, and due diligence, while investing in climate justice solutions centered on Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

Given the climate crisis, respecting Indigenous knowledge, ways of life, and FPIC—including the right to say “no” to extraction—is paramount, as 80% of Earth's biodiversity remains on Indigenous lands. This discussion took place at a formal side-event of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues 2022, featuring Indigenous women leaders and global advocates like Sônia Guajajara and Casey Camp-Horinek.

Organized by the Women’s Earth and Climate Network (WECAN), the Global Women’s Assembly for Climate Justice: Path to COP30 and Beyond brought together over 125 grassroots and frontline women leaders in all their diversity, global advocates, thought leaders, and policymakers representing 50 countries from around the world. During 25 unique panels, speakers showcased a diverse array of visions, projects, policy frameworks, campaigns, and movement strategies with which we can accelerate a bold and transformative path to a healthy and just world.

The Global Women’s Assembly for Climate Justice: Path to COP30 and Beyond, hosted by Women’s Earth and Climate Network (WECAN) from June 23-28, 2025, convened over 125 grassroots and frontline women leaders, advocates, and policymakers from 50 countries. The assembly featured 25 panels showcasing diverse strategies for a healthy and just world.

One key panel, “Divestment Movements & Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels,” held on June 26th, included experts such as Roishetta Sibley-Ozane, Heffa Schücking, Olivia Bisa Tirko (Chapra), Ayumi Fukakusa, and Michelle Cook (Diné). They discussed accelerating a bold, transformative path away from fossil fuels.
