The State of the Sharing Economy with Rachel Botsman

Streamed live on May 19, 2016

The sharing economy has grown rapidly in the last 5 years, and is now popularized by big players such as Airbnb and Uber. But with growth, come growing pains. As the sector comes of age, what steps need to be taken now to unlock its full social potential and to ensure it remains an economic model that empowers not exploits? Rachel Botsman visits the RSA to consider where it's heading next – who will be the next breakout venture to be cited alongside Airbnb and Uber and what about the smaller ventures that are critical to the healthy diversity of the sector?; and to explore the big issues we need to tackle now, from platform culture to monopolization, the power of providers and the future of work.
Six minute version is here.

How I Learned about Capitalism from JS Bach and a Penniless Swami
How I Learned about Capitalism from JS Bach and a Penniless Swami (Full Session)

Some argue that capitalism is a great blessing and a fundamental force for good. Others argue that it can encourage greed. The truth? Both sides are onto something. Free enterprise has lifted billions of people out of poverty worldwide. But while we fight for prosperity at home and around the world, we must guard against materialism and remember that money is only a means to greater ends. Please join Arthur Brooks—New York Times columnist, bestselling author, and president of the American Enterprise Institute—for this thought-provoking conversation.

Why We Should Own the Banks by Ellen Brown

Banks create money – nearly all of it. Should we recapture the sovereign power to create money by reclaiming ownership of the banks? Founder and President of the Public Banking Institute Ellen Brown argues that we need to own the banks – or at least some of them – in order to ensure the safety of our deposits, public and private; to reclaim the profits for the public interest; to reclaim control over where our credit goes and on what terms; and to cut the costs of government.
