Eighteen-year-old Diego Arreola Fernández founded Green Speaking after learning about plastic pollution at the 2019 Ocean Heroes Bootcamp. His campaign uses in-school engagement, social media, and motivational videos to encourage Mexican children, schools, and businesses to combat plastic pollution through habit and policy changes. He also delivers talks to diverse audiences, from young children to business leaders, and postponed a 2020 conference to 2021 due to Covid-19.

Despite Mexico's challenges with violence, poverty, and inequality, environmental awareness is crucial. Diego aims to transform Green Speaking into an environmental organization. Its mission will be to cultivate more leaders, empowering them to advocate for the planet and inspire a sustainable future.

Environmental justice advocates, including The Climate Reality Project, emphasize the urgent needs of communities of color. Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice's "We Can't Breathe" campaign addresses severe environmental injustice in San Francisco's Bayview Hunters Point (BVHP), a low-income community. Residents suffer high rates of asthma and cancer due to radioactive and toxic contamination at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard Superfund site.

BVHP, one of San Francisco's lowest-lying areas, faces extreme vulnerability to rising sea levels, threatening to flood hazardous waste. Despite these risks, luxury homes are being built near, and thousands more planned for, the contaminated Shipyard Superfund Site, amidst allegations of cleanup fraud. A protest will highlight these critical concerns.

Dr. Kate Tully, Assistant Professor of Agroecology at the University of Maryland and director of the AgroEcoLab, explores how to build resilience in coastal farms amidst climate change. Her academic journey includes degrees in English, Spanish, Biology, and Ecology, followed by postdoctoral research at Columbia University's Earth Institute, where she studied the environmental impacts of the African Green Revolution.

Her research broadly examines managing farming systems for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Specifically, she investigates strategies for coastal farmlands affected by sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion, and the use of cover crops to enhance agroecosystem services.
