Portland, Oregon: Train Tankers and Tar Sands Oil

A look at what crosses the Steel Bridge (built in 1910) here in Portland, Oregon a few miles from my home. Is that crude oil in those tankers? As citizens we need to start asking questions that will make our leaders uncomfortable as they may not even be aware of where and when crude oil is moved through urban areas. Produced and written by Ruth Ann Barrett for her YouTube Channel, PDXDowntownerPublished on Apr 2, 2015

Save the oceans, feed the world! by Jackie Savitz:

What's a marine biologist doing talking about world hunger? Well, says Jackie Savitz, fixing the world's oceans might just help to feed the planet's billion hungriest people. In an eye-opening talk, Savitz tells us what's really going on in our global fisheries right now — it's not good — and offers smart suggestions of how we can help them heal, while making more food for all.

Jacqueline Savitz is the Vice President for U.S. Oceans. Jackie’s background and training in marine biology and environmental toxicology combined with two decades of policy experience provides Oceana with a combination of sound science and clear environmental vision.

Saving Indonesia's Most Bio-diverse Ecosystems by Andrew Miner

The Last Resort: The fight to preserve Indonesia's most important tropical paradise

When Andrew Miners first arrived in the Indonesian island village Babitim he was struck by two things: the tropical paradise surrounding him, and the corpses of the mutilated sharks strewn around the beach.

Now Andrew's efforts have been fulfilled as "the worlds most bio-diverse marine habitat" is officially protected by a 425 sq/km "no-take zone", barring anybody but locals to fish inside the perimeter. Featuring astounding underwater footage of marine wildlife set against the brutal realities on board the shark-trawlers, conservationists and natives cooperate to create a model for ocean preservation that "could inform the way we manage oceans around the rest of the world." See Misool Eco Resort.
