Plastic Pollution in the Red Sea

On November 18th 2012 a storm hit Dahab in the Sinai. The floodwaters poured down the wadis, dry stream beds and streets, overwhelming the drainage system. as it did so it picked up the waste, mainly plastic, that had been dumped over time. As the waters rose they had nowhere to go but the ocean, carrying their toxic payload as they did so. I only had a small camera with me and the quality is not brilliant, but this short film highlights the problem quite graphically. The biggest issue for me is that if there were better waste management processes and a change in our behaviour this could have been avoided. Published on Dec 6, 2012
